Am I the only one annoyed by lame Facebook updates? Lame Facebook posters come in several flavors. 1. The baby monster This person posts their baby doing all manner of things: sitting, eating, pooping, laughing, or crying. Babies are adorable but take it down a notch. If we wanted that much detail, we would have moved in with you. Also in this category are, “Hey look at my kid in a baseball outfit!” “Hey look… read more…

Am I the only one who has had an assful of award shows? Whether it’s Anne Hathaway using the word “gauche” or feigning humility in her excessively histrionic speeches or George Clooney giving credit to Hollywood for bringing attention to AIDS and civil rights, I just can’t abide the self-indulgence anymore. And by the way, did Angelina Jolie really stick her leg out of her dress so we could all “oooh” and “ahhh?” Serious kudos… read more…

How fun would it be to be a dictator for a day? Now, I know what you are thinking, “Dictators are bad people that do terrible things.” Not so fast. If I were a dictator for a day, I would do some pretty awesome things. The first half of the day, of course, would be dedicated to doing responsible things that helped the country: create an end date to the dictatorship, set up free elections,… read more…

Driving in Los Angeles is not for the faint of heart. Traffic can spring up at any time of day or night. People behind you will drive so close that you can smell their cologne. If you continue to drive slowly, they will overtake you and then cut you off just to show you their utter contempt for you. Of course, you can be passive aggressive like I am and speed up when they try… read more…

Last week we discussed grammar. This makes me think of another language topic that always makes me curious – idioms. There are idioms that tend to stick but it seems like only the most bizarre ones do. For example, saying that so and so “bought the farm” is a strange way to say that someone died, to say the least. Many years ago, did someone purchase a farm on their deathbed? Or why do people… read more…

Are you are a grammar snob? I’m not and probably have no right to be since I’m not a great writer. However, I, like many of you, often see glaring grammar mistakes that drive me nuts. When I see them, I want to scream and force feed the offender a dictionary. Here, then, are my least favorite grammar or English usage mistakes. *“Nucular” – It’s “nuclear,” dammit. How do so many people, and even politicians,… read more…

When one approaches a panel of urinals in a restroom, there is a whole series of decisions to make. I am here to give you answers. First of all, which urinal do you select? This should be a fairly easy decision. The correct answer is self-evident – you must stand such that you maximize distance from all other peeing men. For example, if there are three urinals and a patron is on the far left,… read more…
